A Glimpse Into The Future – Mi at CES 2017

January 6, 2017 by Reyas Mohammed

CES 2017 was happening at Las Vegas, and the tech world was keeping their eyes focusing in it.
Plenty of products where announced by different tech giants during this event, and Xiaomi was participating in this event for first time.
Many of us were waiting to see what the company is going to announce, and were watching live stream via YouTube as well as Mi Live.

The Mi even started with a video with Mi Mix – Innovation in Full display tagging with “Not just a smartphone, but a door to the future.”

Senior Vice President Xiang Wang has came to the stage, introduced himself and then was presenting the history of Company started in 2010.

He mentioned that the business of the company is focused on three pillars:

Hardware,

Internet services,

Mi Ecosystem (IoT platform)

Also given the figures that the company is now in 20 countries, expanding quickly too.

Then comes the list of hundreds of ecosystem products from the company.

With this, he have invited Hugo Barra to continue with “Innovation for Everyone“.

He have given glimpse of many recent product innovations like “4-axis OIS introduced in Mi 5, also with Curved Ceramic body”, “Ultra sonic fingerprint sensor in Mi 5s”, and then the Mi Note 2 with dual curve design – front and back as well as with a curved OLED screen.
Then the Mi VR innovation with many more features, and the open VR content platform.

What will phones look like in the future?
Here is the Xiaomi’s latest answer to the question:

Mi Mix – Our first concept phone
It has the same size of most common devices out there in market, but it has more screen size than others.
It is a technological breakthrough to achieve this kind of a device. Mi Mix has almost no bezels.

Then Hugo Barra announced that Mi MIX will start shipping in white color as well, and its look was awesome (Pearl like finish).
And here comes a quick look of white color Mi Mix.

After giving the details of Mi Mix, Hugo moved to discuss about the Mi Eco System products consisting of hundreds of smart products and IoT devices.

Xiaomi is currently working with around 77 companies. Also he said Xiaomi is successful tech incubator.
There was a display for Mi Eco system products like Mi Robot vacuum, Air purifier, Mi band 2, Mi Robots, Drones etc.
All these products can be controlled from a single app “Mi Home”, have 5 Million daily users.

MI Router HD – Then next version of Routers

The next version of Mi Router is announced. Will be available later in China for under $500 (8TB) or $200 (1 TB).
More details are available in other threads, so I am not giving more details here.

Then comes the biggest announcement of the day.
It’s thin, very thin. 37% thinner than Mi Mix. Also thinner than iPhone 7. Thin is in, baby.

Mi TV 4 smart TV (not a smartphone!) 4.9mm at thinnest point, almost no bezels

Patch Wall deep learning UI layer. Uses meta-data and viewing history to power personal recommendation engine.
UI uses an adaptive grid based on magazine layouts. More relevant content is presented in larger, easier to notice tiles. It looks pretty slick.
Mi TV 4 will be available in four sizes: 49″, 55″, and 65″.
The 65″ Mi TV 4 will be priced below $2000 with the Dolby Atmos Home Theater bar, and will be below $1500 with the standard Mi TV Bar.

After some photo sessions with Mi TV 4, Hugo mentioned that Mi TV display and Mi TV bar is compatible with earlier Mi Modular TV’s.

Summarizing the products announced. Mi Mix White, Mi Router HD and Mi TV 4
